Meet Our Team

Dr. Leland Judd completed his associate degree in mechanical engineering at UW Lacrosse and his bachelor’s degree in microbiology at UW Madison. He attended the Marquette School of Dentistry for his dental degree, graduating in 1991. In 2005, he established McFarland Family Dental. He completes monthly courses and online education on various dental topics, emphasizing restorative and implant dentistry, in order to remain at the forefront of the dental field. Because of his commitment to continuing education and patient care, Dr. Judd completes more credits each year than required by the State to maintain his dental license.

Dr. Judd has completed advanced training in a number of different areas, including adult oral sedation through the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS), emergency medicine in the dental office with Stanley Melamed, advanced implant training through the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and cosmetic dentistry training through the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. He has been in practice for over 29 years, and is a member of many professional organizations, including:

• Madison Dental Progress Forum
• American Academy of General Dentistry
• American Academy of Implant Dentistry

As a dentist, Dr. Judd is committed to taking the time and care that his patients deserve to understand their needs and wants and to customize treatment plans that his patients will be happy with, and which will optimize their oral health while respecting their time constraints and budget. He enjoys building relationships with his team and patients, and will always take the time to listen to his patients’ needs, discussing all their options with them in order to create a treatment plan and provide them with quality treatments in the most caring manner possible.

Dr. Judd grew up in Evansville, Wisconsin. His father was an electrician, and his mother and family were dairy farmers, cheesemakers or worked for General Motors. His fathers’ brother, who attended Milton college received a PhD in Physics, was a professor at Fresno State. Unfortunately, Dr. Judd did not receive the math gene in the family and had to reconsider his career. He was, however, great with biology and chemistry. One day he had a cleaning appointment with his dentist, Dr. Charlie Nelson, who was also a friend of the family. When Dr. Nelson asked how engineering was going Dr. Judd told him he needed to switch his career pursuit, and Dr. Nelson responded that if he enjoyed working with his hands, he should be a dentist. Dr. Judd is very happy with his career choice!

Dr. Judd and his wife, Amy, have one daughter, Emma. Outside the office his hobbies include camping, hiking, boating, fishing and traveling.

Shae has completed a number of courses with Bill Blatchford Solutions and the Las Vegas Institute (LVI), including training in customer service and dental treatment planning. Her special trainings have made her highly efficient and organized in her coordination of our practice. Shae has been friends with Dr. Judd for over 30 years, and truly enjoys working for him. She loves being part of a close-knit and family-friendly office.

Shae has four children and 10 grandchildren who are her world. Outside the office, she enjoys traveling to visit family and friends.

Shae is fluent in American Sign Language!

Choua initially completed her training as a dental assistant at MATC, and worked as an assistant for over seven years before going back to school to become a registered dental hygienist. She graduated in 2020 and has been practicing as a hygienist since that time. Choua loves our team here at McFarland Family Dental, and appreciates that everyone is always so willing to help. She also enjoys being able to help all her patients with their needs and concerns by co-diagnosing and treating issues alongside our dentist.

Choua and her husband have been married for over five years, and just welcoming their first baby boy! They also have two dogs. When not in the office, Choua enjoys hair and makeup, and can often be found reading and doing “crafty” things.

Choua is fluent in Hmong!

Houa graduated from Madison Area Technical College in dental hygiene with honors in 2021. She enjoys the opportunity to constantly learn and grow through being exposed to new challenges, which helps her develop both professional and personally. Houa is dedicated to providing quality patient care, taking the time to listen to her patients, provide emotional support, educate them on their oral health and actively involve them in their care.

Houa is from a family of eight children, one boy and seven girls, one of whom is her identical twin sister. In her free time, she enjoys reading, watching scary movies and learning new recipes to cook.

Houa is fluent in Hmong!

Smiley completed the dental hygiene program at Madison Area Technical College, graduating with her associates degree in 1994. She has over 23 years of experience in the dental field. She enjoys being part of a team where everyone is kind and helpful to one another, and where our patients are wonderful and appreciative of what we are doing to help them. Smiley is our “go-to” girl — always eager to jump in and lend a hand.

Smiley’s family are her loving cats, and outside the office her hobbies include playing hockey.

Nicole earned her technical diploma in dental assisting from Madison Area Technical College, and is working towards her bachelor’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She loves Dr. Judd’s dad jokes and the fun atmosphere in our office.

Nicole’s best friend is her older sister, and in her spare time she enjoys running and playing sand volleyball.
